SI 3

Image

Materials: Digital photography Processes: Darkening shadows, adjusting coloration be more purple, vignette for unity, bricks for texture Ideas: I turned up the contrast to express the good and bad things Turin has done

SI 3 Progress

Image
For my second SI piece I am doing a photograph of Turin sitting and thinking about his life with the outlaws. I tried several close-up angles, but they all looked awkward, so I went with one farther back. I then changed the coloration to be more purple and deepened the shadows to express his dark past. I used the rule of thirds for the placement of Turin, and added a bit of a vignette to create a sense of unity.

SI 2 Progress

Here is my original photo of my brother as Turin looking depressed. I liked the photo itself but it seemed too clean and simple to portray such a complex and horrible moment in Turin's life. In an attempt to capture these facets of the event I will tear the edges of the photograph to make it seem distressed and incomplete, and I will use watercolor to stain it to symblolize the people he has killed. My question: how can I use emphasis and motion portrait photography to illustrate the themes of "The Great Tales"?

SI Two

This is an image of my brother posing as Turin towards the end of "The Children of Hurin". Turin has just lost his son, his sister, his wife, and accidentally killed his best friend. He feels guilty and very sad. I chose to express those feelings by messing up the printed photograph. Just as life is not simple and neat, neither is this art. I ripped the edgess to give it more of a feel of a single moment, torn out of Turin's life. The red watercolor drips and handprint are to call to the attention of the viewer the guilt he has about the blood on his hands. My main question is: How can I explore the transcendental themes in the "Great Tales" and the messiness of life through altered portrait photography? Ideas: Demonstrating the guilt of Turin through contrast and markmaking Materials:Printed photography, watercolor Processes: I turned up the contrast to emphasise thr struggle of good and evil in Turin, I ripped the paper to make it seem like a momeny r

The Great Tales Two Page Spread

Image
Two Page Spread My first project was to create a two-page spread, a mood board of sorts with ideas and questions pertaining to my sustained investigation. (Pictured above) I chose images from Pinterest (all of the images on the left and the one of the girl on the right) that portrayed the characters from “The Great Tales” in styles similar to what I hope to do. The three photos of Turin (right page) are my own images that I will use in my portfolio. I burned the edges of this spread and stained it with coffee and undiluted watercolor to create a messy, worn, and old effect, in an attempt to emphasize the messiness of life, particularly in “The Great Tales.” Life is often romanticized in fantasy stories, but it is not in these tales.
